Really interesting. I'm curious why Tatami mats came to be seen as a measure of room or apartment size in Japan?

I also wondered if it was a practice - never heard anyone using blankets or tents to measure:)

I think it was just such a standard size that most people had, so became a popular measurement. Just like feet!

I was made curious and looked at what's available to be purchased online. These really are mats, right? That is, they are laid on top of a regular floor, not "installed" in some way?
